The E24 [M635CSi/M6] was made from 1983 to 1989 and came with this engine in North America. A 3.5 liter engine, the [a.] M88/1 and [b.] M88/3 motors, also had 3.5 liters of capacity, but were nor offered in the US models. The above engines are part of the M88/3 six cylinder, inline piston engine family.
The second generation M6 is a Coupe, and called the E63/64 model. It arrived in 2005 at the Geneva Car Show. It uses a 5.0 liter V10 gasoline engine code S85. The S85B50 motor is a DOHC [double overhead camshaft] V10 engine [10 cylinders]. Winning four different International Engine of the Year awards in 2005 from different organizations.
The chassis layout is a F/R setup, called a front engine, rear wheel drive setup. Known as a longitudinal design, using a driveshaft to connect the transmission to the rear.
BMW maintains that the ten-cylinder configuration was inspired by its Formula 1 program, One oddity is that it comes in two horsepower configurations. When you start it up, you have 400 horsepower. To access more power, you press Power or the M button. With the full 500 horsepower, top speed is unchanged, but it takes 0.7 second off the claimed 0-to-62-mph time and 3.6 seconds from the 0-to-125-mph figure.
