What is the difference between a Humvee military vehicle and the Hummer? The two terms overlap somewhat, but generally, “Hummer” refers to the civilian models and “Humvee” refers to the military ones. “Humvee” comes from “HMMWV“, a military term for ‘High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle’.

AM General is the manufacturer of the civilian H1 Hummer .

The standard engines are 6.5L turbo diesels, and for a few years, a 350 (cubic inch) gasoline engine was available, but it was discontinued as of 1997. The 6.2L and 6.5L normally-aspirated (non-turbo) diesel engines were available in earlier models. The new Alpha version is equipped with a Duramax diesel engine.

Both the GM 6.2L and GM 6.5L engines are compression-ignition engines that use diesel fuel as their primary fuel and not gasoline. The 6.2L engine was introduced initially to the Army in the Commercial Cargo Utility Vehicle (CUCV) or Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicles that preceded the introduction of the Humvee.

Since the introduction of these vehicles (CUCVs and Humvees), the Army has followed the single fuel on the battlefield rule, which has resulted in ground vehicles using the aviation kerosene also known as JP8 or kerosene.

Designed as a diesel engine from the ground up by the Detroit Diesel Division of General Motors, the original 6.2L diesel engine was introduced in the 1982 model year GMC and Chevy C/K pickup truck and full-size SUV lines. Taking this engine design to the next level in the 1992 model year, the new 6.5L diesel engine was an advancement in technology, and was designed for the application of a turbocharger.

While the 6.5 was replaced by the Duramax 6600 beginning in the 2001 model year Chevy and GMC vehicle production, the 6.5L diesel engine continues to be manufactured and sold by AM General.
