Question: Hi. I have a 1997 S-10. It is a V6 with the 4.3 liter engine and manual transmission. Heres the problem I am having. When I am trying to maintain a speed (say 35, 45, 55, etc…) the truck jerks really bad. If I let off the gas, its fine. If I give it more gas, its fine. It idles perfect and accelerates perfect. Only problem is when I maintain a speed. This truck has newer plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. Also, after it has been driven for awhile, problem seems to go away. Seems worse in wet, damp, or humid weather. Has anyone seen this type of problem before? Any ideas or advice? Thanks!
Answer: I’m going to make a guess here, the vehicle has not been to a competent repair shop for a real diagnosis. Basically you are spitting into the wind asking around for an answer. Usually people like this guy end up spending excessive money replacing parts. It is always cheaper to get a diagnosis, even if you fix it yourself.
That being said, without seeing the car, this is a guess. My first inclination is that something in the ignition that you did not replace is wet, damp or humidity sensitive. A 1997 Chevy S-10 4.3L engine has a more complicated ignition system than you give it credit for. It is not a 1966 Chevy. You may have a bad ignition module or ignition coil.
It was cheap and acceptable to change ignition parts in your daddy’s 1966 Chevy, things have changed. In fact you may even have a transmission problem. Modern transmissions with lock up torque converters can display similar symptoms, generally not related to dampness or moisture.
The bottom line is that you are wasting time and money by not seeing a professional. You also may be making a simple inexpensive problem worse, that is a guarantee. Some people discount these issues and don’t have them attended to until the vehicle needs a rebuilt engine.
Simply put, if you grew a big lump on your thigh and it hurt and made it hard to walk, would you live with it or would you see a doctor immediately? I hope you would see a doctor.
