Retro-Fire-breathing 427 CID Chevy engine..

September 11th, 2009

I was looking through some of the news I receive every morning from my top secret sources on engines, and cars in general, and ran across this story about a new special production version of the Chevrolet Corvette. I wanted to point out how an ordinary Chevy 427 cubic inch engine (if you can call a big block 427 Chevy engine ordinary) has had several modern performance features added to the engine to get 725 horsepower out of it. you can read the whole article on Lingenfelter Vettes here.

Here is the excerpt that interested me:

Quote:“If you would like to join the club, you’ll need a new-used cars will not be converted-Corvette coupe or convertible with the Z51 Performance Package. Drop it off at Lingenfelter’s Decatur, Indiana, shop and plan on leaving it for two to three months. While it’s there, it will be taken apart, rebuilt, and transformed into one ferocious supercar.

For the money, you get a masterpiece of an engine. Lingenfelter’s technicians pull the engine and replace the block with a Z06 427 block that has been carefully blueprinted and prepped by almost surgical standards. JE pistons, fitted with Total Seal rings, replace the stockers and are installed on Manley fully-machined 4340 rods. Heavy-duty bearings are installed on the rod and mains. “We pull the motor and re-use some of the parts like the cylinder heads and intake manifold,” says Lingenfelter’s Tim Dyer. But before the heads are installed, they too get the full treatment. “Cylinder heads are fully C&C ported,” Dyer says. “They’ve got oversize 2.02/1.57-inch intake/exhaust stainless steel valves.” Exhaust valves are upgraded to Inconel stainless steel to better cope with heat. Lingenfelter runs a specific dual valvespring with a special titanium retainer. Factory roller lifers are retained.
Forced induction makes the cam design less critical, which is part of the reason the stock LS2 cam is also retained, but there’s another reason. “We do that because the cam that comes in it is actually a really good design that lends itself well to this,” Dyer explains, “so we can get stock drivability. Putting a bigger cam in it just makes it drive rougher.” The Twin Turbo also retains the factory roller lifters. Compression is adjusted to 8.75:1

A pair of Garrett hybrid GT28 turbochargers with ball-bearing centers is tucked under each cylinder bank and plumbed with custom molded silicone duct work and hand-fabricated exhaust manifolds. They run about 11 pounds of total boost, and a big intercooler takes a big chunk of the heat out of the intake charge. Put it all together, and believe it or not, the engine runs just fine on 93-octane pump gas.” (end quote..)

This is not your average car and not too many will be produced. The thing that I like is that ‘Lingenfelter’ has used an older design engine, a Chevy 427 cubic inch engine and modernized it. Using modern computerization methods similar to how all modern super hi tech performance cars use retrofitted to a great old engine.

Where can I find a Chevy engine for sale like this. No where. Since they only plan to make 25 of these cars. For some of the baby boomer generation this is an appealing car, especially if you can afford one! However, you can find all sorts of rebuilt engines for sale at GotEngines.com.
