Chrysler combines the Hemi engine and an electric motor in the 2009 Aspen Hybrid

June 2nd, 2009

This large sport-utility vehicle, the Aspen is a fancier version of the Dodge Durango, adds the all-wheel drive hybrid version this year to its lineup that includes traditional all-wheel and rear-wheel drive models.

Except for the facts that the Aspen Hybrid costs about $8,000 more than its pure-gasoline engine partner, starting at $34,730 (although the difference is only about $4,000 when comparable equipment is added), and that it can tow only 6,000 pounds instead of 8,900 pounds, there is much to appreciate.

Foremost is the fuel economy, with EPA estimates of 20 mpg/city and 22 mpg/highway, compared to 13 mpg/city and 18 mpg/highway with the non-hybrids. That is not an impressive difference on the highway, much like the Chevy hybrid pickup. The real savings on fuel is in the city where the electric motor does all or most of the work.

The pride here, though, beyond the electric motor that powers down to four cylinders when cruising, is the 5.7-liter V8 engine. It produces (with the electric help) 385 horsepower. The same basic Hemi we currently sell in the Chrysler used engine line that is being used now.

Does your Chrysler Aspen Hybrid have a Hemi in it? You bet. This is the first we have heard of the Apsen hybrid at GotEngines.com Blog. Chrysler is being very subtle about it. As we know more we will keep you informed, Stay tuned..
