A Good Question About Car Batteries…

March 5th, 2009

“If your car battery is getting old and you can tell it probably needs to be replaced but it is still getting the job done. Can it cause any problems by not being 100% fresh…can it cause other electrical components to burn out or fail? Or is it ok to keep going and get everything out of it I can before I replace it?”

Generally speaking, no, it won’t cause other problems, in most cases the worst thing that can happen is that you will get stranded and need to spend a fortune on a tow or jump start.

That being said, there are several issues a bad battery can cause that are worthy of discussion. Rarely it can cause an alternator problem or perhaps damage a sensor or sensitive electrical component. The most common problem associated with a battery that is old and weak, at least concerning newer computerized cars would be that some of the components on the vehicle may not work well if the voltage is low. For instance a weak battery with low voltage may cause shift problems on a computerized automatic transmission. There are other electrical components that may become lazy as well. These are signs to have your battery or alternator checked out by a competent mechanic.

I have seen computerized transmissions fail due to a bad battery. When a car is driven too long on low voltage the transmission will fail. There is no reason for this since there will be a noticeable difference in performance, which should prompt you to go to a competent repair shop.

A weak battery generally does not damage an engine in reality. however, if you had the unfortunate experience of needing in a replacement engine, there are some good engine strategies to follow.
