The Navistar VT 365, also sold as the Ford Power Stroke, is a Diesel V8 engine. It is used as the Power Stroke in Ford’s F-350 Series Super Duty and under the Navistar name in the International MXT trucks. The 6.0 L Power Stroke turbodiesel was on the Ward’s 10 Best Engines list for 2003.
It is a 32-valve pushrod V8. Bore is 3.74 in (95 mm) and stroke is 4.13 in (105 mm). Output was 325 hp (242 kW) at 3300 rpm and 560 ft·lbf (759 Nm) at 2000 rpm, but as of 2005 that was increased to 570 ft·lbf at 2000 rpm.
The 6.0 L VT365 replaced the 7.3 L T444E, also built by Navistar in Indianapolis, but has not been as successful. A high number of warranty claims, some 50,000,000 in two years, caused Ford to discontinue their contract with Navistar to build a Diesel V6 and paying about $70,000,000 to Navistar as compensation for ending the contract.
Ford considered Navistar rival, Cummins, before deciding to design this new Diesel V6, now known as the DT17, in-house.
Although the engines have been plagued by problems, Ford still sells 250,000 or more each year at a $5,300 premium over the gasoline engine options in its Super Duty trucks. The problems include leaky fuel injectors, oil leaks, and broken turbochargers. There have been 77 technical service bulletins related to the engine since its introduction.
Customers who own vehicles with diesel engines are the most difficult customers to satisfy. Many of them use their vehicles as work trucks or are a part of a fleet service. Diesel power plants are the choice since they are supposed to be more reliable, and last longer with less maintenance, although I argue that a diesel needs plenty of specialized maintenance itself.
