When I saw this story about the largest diesel engine in the world, I became interested, when I looked at the pictures, I could not believe how big the engine is.
The largest engines I have ever seen were, number one: in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. They have a two story display of a one cylinder diesel engine. The piston is about 8 feet in diameter and the engine stands as tall as a three story building.
The other super sized diesel engine I have come in contact with is in Wyoming. They have gigantic electricity generators with a smokestack as tall as the trees that use similar giant one cylinder diesel engines that are set up near many of the small remote towns.
