Rebuilt Cummins Diesel Engines

The B-series Cummins diesel engines will be referred to in the history books as one the most important engine development projects of four and six-cylinder inline engines for the auto industry using the popular 3.9L four-cylinder and 5.9L six-cylinder engines. The B-series is commonly used in many markets all over the world, including pick-up trucks, and all sorts of equipment that uses ‘small’ compact V series diesel engines.

Known by diesel engine people as the “one-liter per cylinder” engine.

The first engine, a four cylinder engine rolled off the line July 1983 and the primary goal by Cummins was to manufacture an indestructible V series diesel engine reminiscent of the incredible success that was built over a long period of time. The 3.9L engine began production in 1984 as an agricultural engine for use in Case products.

The B series engine family was a big gamble by Cummins’, entering the smaller diesel engine market to enlarge their line and service smaller equipment than the typical equipment used in the large diesel market. A big chance at the time that paid dividends, eventually becoming more than 20 percent of Cummins’ current total production. As a result, Cummins took a huge step toward operating and supplying engines for Dodge pickup trucks.

In this article we will focus on the six-cylinder 5.9L engine that most of you are familiar with in the diesel series of Dodge Ram pickup trucks. There are two engines available, the original design which has two valves per cylinder and the ISB called the Interact System B-Series, with 4 valves per cylinder.

Initially, Cummins needed a big time customer in the competitive automotive field to plant a small version of a proven super duty diesel engine in it for research. After nearly four years of discussion, Chrysler, which did not have a diesel pickup at the time such as Ford and GM, completed an agreement, and the 5.9 B engine would go into the 1989 Ram pickups.

Chrysler did not have in house designers or engineers on staff at the time, so they subbed out the engine production to a company with diesel experience, which was offered on Cummins. Cummins actually had to do their own on road research for their prototype engines by producing the first 30 vehicles for Chrysler.

Any information you may need about any Cummins diesel engine can be found using the Control Parts List on the engine data specification plate. The CPL is basically the same thing as a line setting sheet, and it tells you every possible specification of said engine and related parts. For the Dodge 5.9L it can be found on or near the driver side of the front timing cover. Use the CPL with the engines serial number you’ll have all the information for parts and service.

Cummins has a long well respected history. It looks like Dodge made a good choice by subletting out their diesel engine needs to a company known for it’s integrity.
