When I was a kid, my mom would take me and my sisters to the biggest county fair in Maryland. It was huge, had all the different animals and vendors and my favorite, the Tractors and Farm equipment. Now this was before I really knew how many types of engines there actually was, although I knew things that moved generally had an engine since I just loved playing with lawnmower engines, little did I know at the time I would make a life out of fixing lots of engines and related components
This story I was reading about The Rice County Steam and Gas Engines club in The Northfield News in Minnesota really brought me back about 45 years or so. My mom would take the three kids and some neighbors to the fair, once we got there she knew where I would be. At the tractors and equipment show, climbing all over every tractor or piece of farm equipment there, looking for a set of keys to start the big engines!
Strange, I never found the keys! Some kids may not believe this, but there were no cell phones or beepers back then, so when my mom or dad wanted me, they had to walk over to the tractor displays and get me. I would generally go along peacefully (not thrilled) after rationalizing why I should stay with the tractors. Food was good thing to offer me to get my attention, one of my other great loves!
Well, I still don’t know a whole lot about tractor engines, never even drove one, that is one of my goals in life. Some folks want to take a Cruise or go to Prague, not me, I wanted to drive a really big tractor. I ended up owning and operating and rebuilding transmissions for over 30 years. The only transmissions and rebuilt engines that came out my shop were for cars and up to semi-heavy duty trucks. Even the Grove Goats, or citrus pickers and haulers we fixed had conventional car engines.
