Engine Theory: Cylinder Deactivation
August 29th, 2009
Also called multiple displacement, displacement on demand (DOD), and variable cylinder management, in reference to automotive engines.
Cylinder Displacement technology merely deactivate some of the engine’s cylinders when they are not needed. This temporarily turns a 8- or 6-cylinder engine into a 4- or 3-cylinder engine. This technology is not used on 4-cylinder engines since it [...]
Variable Valve Timing & Lift (VVT&L)
August 29th, 2009
Also called variable valve actuation (VVT), variable-cam timing and variable valve timing and lift electronic control (VTEC)
Engines with Variable Valve Timing & Lift Valves control the flow of air and fuel, into the cylinders and exhaust out of them. When and how long the valves open (timing) and how much the valves move (lift) both [...]
Engine anatomy and functions, simplified…
August 22nd, 2009
In previous articles, we discussed the major systems that make up an automobile. Today, we’ll be taking a look at the main component of drive train of your car: the engine. The drive train includes the engine, transmission, drive shafts, and axles. There are several sub-systems that support the drive train, such as cooling, lubrication, [...]
Advantages of single overhead camshaft engines (SOHC)…..
May 31st, 2009
Finishing up the What is a Single Overhead Cam Engine post:
The main advantages of SOHC Engines Compared to DOHC Engines
A single overhead camshaft set up basically represents a simpler version of the more complex dual overhead cam engine. As indicated in its name, a dual overhead cam uses two camshafts per bank of cylinders [...]

Continuation article on catalytic converters…
May 28th, 2009
Part-2 continuation post from yesterdays ‘Cat’ post.
On 1996 and newer vehicles that have On Board Diagnostics II (OBD II), there is a “catalyst monitor” that monitors the operating efficiency of the converter. A second oxygen sensor is mounted behind the converter to compare oxygen levels in the exhaust before and after the converter.
Under normal operating [...]
Automotive engine catalytic converters or ‘cats’- part-1…
May 28th, 2009
What is the most important emissions control device on a vehicle today? The catalytic converter, because it cleans up any exhaust pollutants that exit the engine. It operates at temperatures of 600 to 1000 degrees F.
BTW: Parking over a pile of dry leaves or the like can start a fire..
Providing the converter does its job efficiently, [...]
What is an engine ‘camshaft’ and what does it do?
May 26th, 2009Call them what you want, rebuilt, remanufactured or reconditioned engines: a cost effective choice..
May 26th, 2009
My favorite choice as an engine replacement strategy for my 1988 GMC 1 ton 4×4 pickup with a 5.7 liter engine would be a rebuilt, reconditioned or remanufactured Chevrolet engine. They all stand for the same thing. Just different terminology or jargon.
When we discuss rebuilt engines at GotEngines.com (we will use all three engine terminologies [...]
What types of oil systems do automotive engines use?
May 25th, 2009
Lets talk about how automotive or truck engine oil systems work. GotEngines.com will discuss with 2 of the 3 systems today.
1. Wet sump- splash system. Not used in cars for more years than I can remember. They have not used a splash system in lawn mowers fro 15 or 20 years. It served it’s purpose at the [...]
