One of the first pieces of advice I have for people who have to locate a replacement engine and swap it out in their vehicle is to check the surrounding components that help support the operation of your replacement engine. These components involve the cooling system, and the basic parts that in general can be reused on a replacement engine, but should be replaced instead to eliminate old, failure prone components which can sabotage a replacement engine job.

The most common components that should be replaced on every exchanged engine job include (99% of the time): belts and radiator hoses, mechanical fuel pump, water pump, thermostat, radiator cap, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, breather filter, plug wires, rotor, distributor cap, spark plugs, pcv valve, and emission control sensors.

Knowing this is important since many times a related system such as the cooling system was the cause of failure. If the engine overheated to a point where you had an engine failure, if you do not fix the cooling system and your replacement engine fails, do you think it will be warrantied? Some rebuilt engines come with a fresh distributor and new spark plugs and wires, obviously you won’t need those parts.

The point is that many times a supporting member of the cast has caused some of the problems. Or over the course of many years a member of the supporting cast is so worn down by the time your engine fails, although it may still work, it is working at a low level, making it ineffective for your replacement engine. In essence, when you replace your engine, make sure your supporting cast is up to the task.
