Engine Repair Tips: Leak at rear engine main seal..

August 2nd, 2009

Here is an engine repair tip for fixing a leak on a hard metal shaft where the old seal wore a groove. Usually occurring to the front engine crankshaft seal or to the rear engine crankshaft seal.  When the groove gets to deep for a Kwik-Sleeve to solve, you may be looking for an engine for sale..

  • Contact between a rotating shaft and a seal causes shaft wear. Dirt or other abrasive particles can collect under the seal lip and eventually cause a groove in the shaft surface. Grooves can allow oil to leak out, which can result in bear-ing damage and failure. Kwik-Sleeve is a fast, economical and effective way to refinish a seal-worn shaft. It is a precision engineered sleeve made of stainless steel and then hard chromed for extended life. Because of its thin-wall design, a Kwik-Sleeve can be used without changing the size of the seal and its finish is ideal for lip- sealing applications. No expensive preparation or machining is required before mounting. Each Kwik-Sleeve comes with a removable installation flange. If you can catch your fingernail in a shaft groove or seal wear track, a Kwik-Sleeve can be installed to prevent leakage. and its own installation tool. The installation tool reduces the possibility of sleeve distortion and provides for sleeve installation without the removal of the shaft from the serviced equipment. Do not install a Kwik-Sleeve over shaft keyways, splines or ports. The thin-walled sleeve surface may become distorted, causing leakage.

Kwik-Sleeve is an effective way to fix a serious leak such as the one described above, with engine in the car. A time and money saver. If the seal is replaced and the groove is not attended to, than you can expect a prompt return of the leak. It is a wonderful option for transmission shops. When the transmission is out of the car, it is a perfect time to inspect the rear main engine seal for leaks and if  a leak is found how convenient for both you and the customer to do a quality repair while the transmission is out.

I would not want to buy a rebuilt engine that had a quick Sleeve. If the crankshaft has a groove on either end, the crankshaft should be replaced or machined professionally during a rebuild. I would request having a Quick-Sleeve installed in a used engine before it is installed, if used was my engine replacement choice.
