Don't get the Blues from broken windshield wipers..

Don't get the Blues from broken windshield wipers..

Although we sell engines and other related automotive parts, I have an unrelated winter time tip for you. Since we just spent 411.00 dollars on the repair, you may be interested in what happened and why. My moms car is a 1999 Saturn SL-2. She lives in Maryland where the terrible snow storm hit and crippled the city last month.

One of the problems with snow and ice building up on your cars windows is that the ice encapsulates you windshield wiper blades in an icicle to the windshield. When you go outside after a snow storm or ice storm and your car is iced over, make enough time to warm the car up for 20 minutes before you go out to go where you have to go. Although this is somewhat of a gas waster it beats a 411.00 dollar repair bill.

What she did is very common and causes lots of people the same frustrating and expensive situation my mom had. She wanted to go somewhere, so she got in the car and started it, turned on the wipers to knock the snow off the windshield and it did. She warmed up the car and went about her business.

When she got home the windshield wipers would not turn off by the switch. She is a smart women, but not about cars. she shut the car down and the wipers stopped. But they did not go down into the stopped position, they were stopped in the middle of a stroke. She went around the front of the car and with all of her 105 or so pounds, she forced the wiper blades down to the locked position.

That broke the wiper motor. You know they don’t use steel gears in wiper motore anymore. Now they use plastic gears. What may have been a simple repair, turned into an expensive issue. I think you see what I’m getting at. By the by, some cars have windshield warmers in them now, use them if you have them.

The hood and dashboard had to be removed to install a new wiper motor assembly. Ouch! Use this tip wisely and replace your wiper blades twice a year.
