Sweep away winter engine problems

As the winter breaks and spring time comes, this is the most opportune time to do some service on your car, truck, RV, or whatever you drive. The winter this year was particularly bad, even in Florida where I live it got close to 30 degrees. That’s like 40 below zero for you northerners! Cold weather is murder on car engines.

After a winter with ice and snow and extreme cold for extended periods, I suggest you take your car to your favorite mechanic for some spring time servicing. In Florida we have more heat related issues to deal with and obviously no snow. What I am proposing is not going to be expensive, in fact it is cheap when you consider how much more quality life your car will enjoy, and that is good news to you.

1. Have your car detailed by a professional. A professional car detail-er will clean in places most folks never think of. Between fender wells and body seems. this flushes out salt and other corrosives that rust the body. The exterior of your car is the least important part of a detail.
2. Have your engine oil and filter changed and make sure the chassis is greased. Grease squeezes out any corrosive liquids in the joints. Engine oil builds up condensation in it during the cold months. The car does not get hot enough to burn the moisture out of it in extreme cold.
3. Have the cooling system examined.
4. Spray WD-40 or the equivalent on all of your hinges, door locks and any rubber components you can see. Note: This is a top secret way to make your car last forever.
5. Have the front end and alignment checked. The potholes in the roads, and ice can cause suspension safety issues and throw a front end out of alignment, which cause excessive tire wear. While it is on the alignment rack, ask the mechanic to spray the control arm bushings and body bushings with WD-40.
6. Make sure the alignment company checks your tires too. Just in case.
7. Now you can wax your car.

If anyone thinks of something else pertinent, please leave it in the comment area. This has been a successful recipe for me for over 40 years. Where do think I got the idea? I was born in Washington DC and lived in Maryland for my first 26 years. I also lived in Wyoming for a year, where only real men live. So cold is not a stranger to me.

This should set you up for a safe and reliable year of driving. don’t forget that the radiator needs to be checked before it gets cold again. Don’t worry, I’ll remind you at the right time. GotEngines.com @ 1-888-344-8044
