This is the first of the Chevy Ecotec engines, a non-turbo four-cylinder ECOTEC to get direct injection. It’s making it’s debut on the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox with 182 HP and 30 MPG on the highway. Expect this engine to make it’s way to more applications in the future. Unfortunately GMI (General Motors International) can confirm that the new DI engine will NOT be making it’s way to the 2010 Malibu….at least not as of yet. Just to erase any potential speculation.

SIDI is an acronym for Spark Ignition Direct Injection Engine. Vehicles with SIDI engines have 10% improvement in torque and as much as 20% fuel economy benefit compared to current PFI (Port Fuel Injection) engines.

The new 2.4L DI engine delivers an estimated 180 horsepower (134 kW) @ 6700 rpm and 172 lb.-ft. of torque (232 Nm) @4900 rpm. It uses technology based on GM’s other four-cylinder direct injection applications, but with unique features designed for its specific application. This includes an 11.4:1 compression ratio that helps build power, slightly dished pistons that increase combustion efficiency and injectors with an application-specific flow rate.

Japanese and European companies (Mitsubishi, Toyota, Nissan, Volkswagen, and Renault) have begun manufacturing with SIDI engines. Because of the improved fuel economy compared with standard gasoline engines, these SIDI-powered vehicles are experiencing strong market success.

Keeping up to date on every engine from the past and future is part of being a successful engine supplier. Being on the top is a lonely job. As we scaled the wall of success, there are very few suppliers at the top. We work hard everyday to provide the type of product you expect.
