Alaska High school students compete for automotive scholarship

May 24th, 2009

This is the kind of vibe ithat Brian and I like to hear. I like to see young people getting into the mechanical field. GotEngines.com has an interest in new well trained young mechanics entering the field. Good technicians cause less problems, thus actually lowering the cost of mechanical work through quality diagnostic techniques.

Students from five schools across the state of Alaska have competed in the state finals at UAA. They raced the clock to identify and fix problems intentionally installed on cars.

Organizers say there’s a shortage of good, trained auto techs in Alaska and throughout the whole country. Did you know that average age of a professional mechanic is 43 years old. Suggesting not enough young people are entering the field. It is a great field of work. Qualified mechanics get payed quite handsomely, not to mention being a mechanic nowadays requires quite a bit of intelligence and manual dexterity.

This contest gives the Ford Motor Co. a way to recruit new technicians. Good idea!!

Apparently the winner will actually receive a quite sizable scholarship from Ford Motor Co. to go through their training program, and at the end of that training program they’ll be a fully fledged trained Ford technician.

After fixing the cars, students had to drive their vehicles across the finish line, where judges took a look at accuracy and workmanship.

The promotion of becoming an auto mechanic is something we need to push harder on in our GotEngines.com Blog. I want young people to know it is not the same old greasy business it used to be. We get to use computers and all sorts of high dollar scanners and tools nowadays.
