Chrysler used the “PowerTech” name on engines used in Jeep vehicles, including the AMC Straight 6 engine (from 1996 onwards) and the 2.4 L four cylinder engine. The 3.7 L V6 version first debuted in 2002 for the Jeep Liberty.
The 3.7 liter PowerTech V-6 Jeep engines are, essentially, the 4.7 V-8 with two less cylinders. It is being used to replace the 2.5 liter four-cylinder, as well as the 3.9 liter V6 engine, both used only on Jeeps and trucks. Its first use was being the optional engine on the Jeep Liberty, followed quickly by use as the 2002 Dodge Ram’s stock engine. In both cases, the 3.7 V6 was hooked up to a five-speed manual transmission or an automatic overdrive transmission. It also had an optional six-speed manual trans. available.
The Jeep Liberty was the first Jeep to use two of the new PowerTech engines, a 150 hp 2.4 L I4 and a 210 hp 3.7 L V6.
