The Neon is made by Chrysler corporation, although it’s known as the Dodge Neon in the US. Made from 1995 through 2005. Dodge made two generations of Neon. The Neon was designed to be a simple affordable car and only offered 3 Dodge Neon engines for in sale in all.
The first generation Neon was made from 1995 to 1999 and offered two different engines. Both were inline four cylinder motors that run on gasoline. Both engines consumed 2 liters in size or 2000 cc, or 123 cubic inches.
1. A588 engine; A SOHC [single overhead camshaft] engine with 132 horsepower. A mild mannered engine for maximum fuel mileage.
2. 420A engine; The version in the Neon is also a SOHC with a bit more horsepower at 150 hp.
The R/T model sported a 420S engine which used a DOHC head [double overhead camshaft].
The second generation Dodge Neon used on only one engine option in all.
1. A588; The A588 is the SOHC version. Output is 132 hp. It has an aluminum SOHC cylinder head. It uses a reinforced plastic intake manifold (although a few of the 1995 & 1996 engines received an aluminum intake manifold due to a shortage of the plastic parts). They were painted black, but it’s easy to see the casting marks and prints on the manifold. The aluminum version is much prized among enthusiasts as it’s easy to port and polish for increased flow characteristics.
For all practical purposes the Neon was designed to be an economical car without a bunch of luxuries or expensive options. Not only that the engines were designed to fit more than just the Neon model so pleny of engines exist nowadays.
