Geo was introduced in 1989 as a brand of small cars and SUVs marketed by General Motors as a subdivision of their Chevrolet division. Originally formed by GM to compete with the growing small import market of the late 1980s, the line continued through the 1998 model year, after which the remaining models joined the Chevrolet lineup.
All Prizms were powered by the same Toyota engines as the then present Toyota Corolla models.
- 1990–1992 Geo Prizms were powered by the 4A-FE or optional 4A-GE engine.
- 1993–1997 Geo Prizms were powered by the 4A-FE or optional 7A-FE engine.
- 1998–2002 Chevy Prizms were equipped with Toyota’s 1.8 L 1ZZ-FE I4 engine; 2000–2002 models included VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence) technology.
Another example of an American car that is powered by a Japanese or Foreign engine. Not that any of the Geo’s were best sellers, there are still plenty of them on the road that need service work and engine work. The good news in terms of engines for the Geo Prizm, in particular, is that they used reliable and affordable Toyota engines.
The Geo was introduced to the GM line as one of the first fuel efficient small cars. Hoping to compete with the Japanese cars. Although it had less success than expected, when it comes to engine repairs or engine replacement, it really comes down to a Toyota engine. Which there seems to be plenty of.
