Mazda 3 2.3 Fwd DOHC engine for sale

September 7th, 2010

Here is where it gets confusing. The Mazda 3 2.3 Fwd DOHC [double overhead camshaft] engine is actually produced by Ford Motor Company. Duratec is Fords trade name for said engine. It comes in four, five and six cylinder versions and runs on gasoline. We have the Mazda 3 2.3 Fwd DOHC engine for sale, which is only one [1] of the 11 different motor sizes in this engine family.

It is a front wheel drive, or a transverse mounted…[east-west]..engine. This means that the engine runs from side to side instead of front to back, which is traditionally a rear wheel drive or longitudinally mounted motor. North to south.

The Mazda 3 was introduced for the 2004 model year, replacing the Mazda Familia. A more performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 marketed as Mazdaspeed3 in North America. The second generation Mazda3 was unveiled in late 2008.

The 2.3L engine was used in the Mazda 3 first generation models made until 2008. The second generation Mazda 3 does not use the 2.3L motor. In fact the Gen II uses several diesel engine variants.

In the American market, we only have two 2.3L variations available. The 156 horsepower naturally aspirated [non turbo] and the Mazdaspeed3, which uses a turbocharger and produces 363 horsepower. The award-winning turbocharged version of the 2.3 comes with direct injection spark ignition, or “DISI”.

Note: DISI [direct injection spark ignition], gasoline direct injection [GDI] is a variant of fuel injection used in modern two- and four- stroke gas engines. The gasoline is highly pressurized, and injected by a common rail fuel line directly into the combustion chamber of each cylinder, compared to conventional multi-point fuel injection [MPFI] that disperses in the intake manifold tracts.

Not being common knowledge, Mazda has has a relationship with Ford Motor Company since October of 1969 when they formed the JATCO {American Transmission Company] which manufactured transmissions for Mazda, Ford and some Nissan’s. In 1971 both companies became involved in some ”common” cars with different names. The Ford Probe and Mazda 626 engines are identical.
