The F20C and F22C1 are inline-4 engines are produced by Honda. They are the only Honda 4-cylinder engines for sale that are designed to fit longitudinally, north to south for rear wheel drive. Transverse is east to west in the front of the car for front wheel drive.
These engines are not realted in any capacity to the F-series engines found in the mid 90s Honda Accord and Prelude. They share many properties with the K-series. These engines, unlike most F-series engines, have two counter-rotating overhead cams, a VTEC system for both the intake and exhaust camshaft, carbon-fiber reinforced cylinder liners (FRM), molybdenum disulfide-coated piston skirts for reduced friction, and uses a more modern chain driven valvetrain as opposed to a belt driven system.
The F20C was designed with high maximum rpm in mind, for increased power output; maximum redline is at 9000 rpm, with VTEC engagement at 6000 rpm. Derived from Honda’s extensive racing background, it is only installed in the performance oriented Honda S2000.
Power output is 240 horsepower at 8300 rpm in North America and Europe. The Japanese version, which has a higher compression ratio, is capable of 247 horsepower at 8600 rpm. Honda’s F20C Engine has won several ‘Best Engine” awards.
The engine displaces 1,997 cc, (121.9 CID), lending to the Honda S2000′s name. This method of naming follows suit with the rest of the Honda S roadsters such as the Honda S500, S600, and S800.
Applications:
- 1999-2003 Honda S2000 (North America)
- 1999-2005 Honda S2000 (Japan)
- 1999-present Honda S2000 (United Kingdom, Europe)
The F20C produces the highest specific power for any naturally aspirated piston engine in the world, in a car worth less than 100,000 dollars, at 120 horsepower per liter, including the the 1.6 L (98 cu in) Honda B16B engine found in the 1996-2000 Honda Civic Type R producing 185 horsepower for a specific power of 115.8 horsepower per liter.
