My solution for the clunker engine, gas guzzler, whatever problem you call it is about 180 degrees different from what happened. I think it would stimulate the economy and solve the problem in a better manner.
For the folks who needed a new car, than the program was a success, and I would leave that option open to people. The other option I would go with is allowing the people who own clunkers ( I don’t like that word, since my truck is classified as a clunker), to have up to 4500.00 dollars credit toward rebuilding the clunker engines and doing things like using ” hi gas mileage” camshafts, and installing more fuel efficient fuel intake systems and even fixing a few other problems. $4500.00 is more than enough to do that.
In essence, by extending an offer of $4500 Government Credit to the folks who can’t afford a new car or get credit for a new car, the opportunity to improve the performance, fuel mileage and emissions of their cars would be a real plus. It would not cut them out of the process. Whether you know it or not, most of the ‘clunkers’ actually got decent fuel mileage and when tuned properly had very acceptable emissions. That is fact.
I’m not going to let you off the hook, I have a personal success story and some ideas on how to make a significant increase in fuel mileage and reduction in the emissions of your engine for a lot less than $4500.00.
