The Dodge SRT-4 was a compact sporty car produced by Dodge from 2003 to 2005. A variation of the Dodge Neon with a 2.4l turbocharged engine Dodge. The car was developed and produced by the PVO (Performance Vehicle Operations) tuner group. An in house Daimler Chrysler operation.
At the time, the production SRT-4 was introduced, the car was the second fastest stock production vehicle in the Dodge sold, second only to the Viper.
The engines, were a new design at the time based on the 2.4-liter turbo the company has been selling in the Mexican market. Although, in the SRT-4’s case it’s heavily updated. Still displacing 2.4 liters, it has stronger new pistons, which are now cooled by oil tiny dispensers. Stronger rods and a new cast iron crankshaft, both support the 14 psi forced down the intake manifold by the Mitsubishi turbocharger. Before entering the intake manifold, return air is cooled by a large front-mounted cross-flow inter-cooler, which has a great look to it.
Sort of a novelty or specialty car, not many were made. This engine was nearly identical to the 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser GT (A855 engine), except for above mentioned engine components. So, the structure and integrity of the engine had proven to be on par with the power enhancements. Which is one reason this motor was chosen.
Having had the pleasure of driving one a few years ago was the proof I needed. The car is noticeably light in weight and has extraordinary acceleration and handling abilities for such a cost effective vehicle.
The most difficult problem facing the engine consumer is knowing you purchased the exact engine you need, not an imitation or a beefed up A855, PT Cruiser engine in the hunt for a replacement engine for your SRT-4.
