The SRT-8 is a special version of the Dodge Charger introduced in 2005, basically as a performance vehicle. Equipped with the 6.1L Hemi head engine and featured upgrades in the brakes, using Brembo brakes [Porsche uses Brembo brakes!] and a stiffer suspension. We stock a Dodge SRT8 V8 6.1 engine for sale, fully equipped and ready for installation. Producing 425 horsepower, it rivals the power ratings of the original Hemi engine.
Being anything but of the original Hemispherical head design, except for the hemispherical combustion chamber design [the reason it is called a Hemi]. The new 6.1 Hemi has 2 spark plugs per cylinder to burn cleaner and squeak out more power. The original Hemi was 426 cubic inches or 6.9 liters. The 6.1 liter Hemi is 375 cubic inches.
One of the coolest features is that each cylinder has an ignition coil pack over one spark plug, and a regular plug wire connected to the other spark plug. The coil pack also has a plug wire attached to it that extends to the opposite cylinder bank. Each cylinder shares a coil pack with another cylinder. Each of the two plugs on a given cylinder is fired by a separate coil. One plug has a coil directly attached, and the other is fired via an ignition wire connected to a coil located on another cylinder on the opposite bank.
The modern Hemispherical combustion chambered engines also incorporate an MDS ignition system [multiple displacement system]. Essentially the MDS deactivates certain cylinders under low power applications to save fuel. It operates off of a highly computerized system that detects the smallest difference in throttle settings.
