Ford states the new “Boss” 6.2 liter SOHC V8 ICE which pumps out 400 horsepower and 400 foot pounds of torque, will be available as an option in the winter of 2010. Until then, the Raptor will come standard with the troublesome Ford’s 5.4 liter SOHC engine that produces 320 horsepower and 390 foot pounds of torque. Will it be worth the wait? We hope so.
The engine will make its debut appearance in 2010 in the F-150 SVT Raptor. Originally dubbed the Hurricane, the name was changed to the Boss after Hurricane Katrina devastated much of the Louisiana and Mississippi coast line in August 2005
The Boss will have design characteristics similar to the modular V8, its predecessor. Fans of the modular V8 will recognize the deep skirt block with cross bolted main caps, overhead camshaft arrangement and crankshaft driven oil pump. The bore centerline is the single biggest difference between the Boss and the modular V8. The Boss will also have single overhead camshafts, two valves per cylinder, and two spark plugs per cylinder. The fuel economy will be increased and emissions reduced utilizing cylinder deactivation.
We still don’t have many details on the Ford Boss engine, other than the expected output of horsepower, torque and a few design details. GotEngines.com blog suspects the Boss engine will replace the V-10 option in the Super Duty line and Ford has already confirmed the engine will first come to market in the Raptor later this year. The Raptor is planned to hit the market with only the current Ford 5.4-liter V-8 and add the 6.2-liter engine several months later.
That is about all the information being released as of now. At least info that appears to be consistent with several sources. Sign up for our free blog and keep up to date on the latest developments on this new Ford engine.
