Ford Mustangs, Chevrolet Z-28’s and Plymouth Hemi’s ruled…

May 1st, 2009

Long before GotEngines.com or anything like them became an idea, the Ford Mustang started a generation of factory sports cars. Realistically the original Corvette in 1953 and the Ford Thunderbird were the first real 2 seater American Sports cars. They were a little pricey and hard to get, at the time. By any standards though, a high impact new car was born.

The real changer was the Mustang in 1964 and a half. It turned the car world upside down. What a beauty. Next came the Camaro and Firebird and finally the Barracuda by Plymouth. It was not long before the factories became competitive and started to produce high performance versions of each one of the cars.

Ford introduced the Mustang GT with a bad ass 289, which evolved into the fire-breathing high revving Boss 302 Mustang. And then came the unimaginable Boss 429 which was one of the coolest cars ever built.

Chevy began experimenting with the 350 cubic inch engine in the Rally Sport Camaro and eventually made some 396 cubic inch and 427 cubic inch Camaro’s that shook the ground. But the Camaro Chevrolet built that will stand immortally is the 1967-1968 Z-28 model. It was Chevy’s hot, bad ass version of the Boss 302 Mustang. And man was it worthy.

Plymouth had a variety of muscle cars that is to long to mention, but needless to day, the original Hemi will stand as one of the greatest engines ever. At least to hot-rodders. The Hemi and Plymouth deserve a post of their own.

Trivia is fun and interesting. We live in a different world now. A rebuilt transmission can cost as much as $3000.00 now a days, give or take a few hundred dollars, a rebuilt transmission cost about $350.00 in the early ’70’s. That is quite an increase in cost.

What that does is make regular maintenance more important than ever. it means your cooling system and radiator need regular examinations, transmissions need to be serviced and every fluid needs to be monitored. GotEngines.com blog has some helpful tips on how to achieve the goal of keeping your car running longer than you expected, and with a lot less down time and aggravation.

It is a far cry from the hybrids being produced now, but man we had a good time!!

Thanks for bringing back some memories there Danny (forbidden since we have to think of fuel economy now). Having had an opportunity to drive a Shelby, I’m there with you (I still like my ‘99 Staurn I drive today though).
