Ford 2.5L Engines

July 3rd, 2010

Ford introduced the new technology Atkinson Cycle 2.5L hybrid engine for 2010. Ford engineers talk about modern technology. I’m not an expert on every technology that comes along, and I’m certainly not an expert on Atkinson designed engines, however, the engine design was introduced in 1882 by a man named, you guessed it, Atkinson. At that time, early into internal combustion engine technology, the design was not considered feasible, times have changed and new technology can make good use of old designs.

The 2.5L Atkinson I4 engine and electric motor, found in the Ford Fusion Hybrid is a fresh and encouraging design for 2010. This type of hybrid power train has two different and separate sources of power. One is an electric motor and the other power source is a 2.5L Atkinson-Cycle I4 Hybrid engine.

Having up to three times the capacity of a more common nickel-cadmium battery the electric motor is powered by a nickel-metal hydride battery. This electric motor with the new batteries can sustain speeds up to 47 miles per hour before the hybrid engine seamlessly starts up to provide more power for passing and highway speeds. The transition from electric to gas is almost undetectable.

More information on Atkinson design engines if you feel inclined. The real issue is that these are newer engines and have not been entirely proven on the roads yet. It may be a few years before we can get some reliable input on how this motor fairs and lives up to it’s billing.
