2002 3.9L Thunderbird Engine
The 3.9L Ford engines were first introduced in America as Lincoln engines, sold between 2002 to 2005 in selected Lincoln LS models and Ford vehicles. Manufactured by Jaguar and called the AJ-V8, it is a DOHC (double overhead camshaft) V8 engine. Some of Ford Thunderbirds and several Land Rovers came equipped with said engine. In fact it was only the forth new generation engine introduced in the history of Jaguar.
The engine uses a double stage (VVT) Variable Valve Timing system to switch the intake cam timing by 30°. A more sophisticated system was used in the newer engines, which can vary intake timing incrementally up to 48°. The Lincoln version does not use this technology.
Other engine features include fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods, a special one-piece cast camshaft, and reinforced plastic intake manifold.
It made the Wards top 10 engine list for 2000. I want to make this very clear, Jaguar designed the engine in its entirety, it is manufactured in the UK, and a simplified variation (no VVT) is shipped over to the US where Lincoln install it in their LS model!
For the Lincoln LS production run from 1999 until 2006, it was based on the Fords DEW98 chassis platform, which was shared with the Jaguar S-Type and Ford Thunderbird. LS versions were originally to be called LS6 and LS8 depending on engine choice, but those designations were replaced with “LS V6″ and “LS V8″
The LS was devised to appeal to a younger generation of luxury car buyers as well as to those who would have normally chosen auto manufacturers such as BMW or Mercedes-Benz for a luxury sport sedan.
You were lucky if you purchased a vehicle with the 3.9L or AJ-V8 engine in it. Other than some very early design changes in the materials used to coat the cylinder walls, reliability has been a strong point. The engine is so much more though.
