One of the most successful Ford engines ever made was the Ford Inline or straight 6 cylinder 250, a 4.1L six-cylinder engine. Offered as a 200 cubic inch motor as standard equipment, and as an option available for the 1969 Ford Mustang engines, and the standard engine for the mid-sized line of Ford cars (such as the Ford Maverick and Fairlane) in the 1970 production year. The Inline Six 250 would soon become the standard engine offered by Ford with their Mustang in 1971.

This same engine would be rated at only 98 hp in 1972 and this rating would drop to 88 hp in 1971 based on constant emission upgrades. Both engines look the same from the outside, unless you have a trained eye. So, if you happen to be interested in acquiring a rebuilt 250 engine you may want to contact an engine replacement specialist.

The Inline Six 250 can be distinguished externally from the 200 by five freeze plugs on the side of the engine block (as opposed to 3 freeze plugs on the 200 engine) and the seven main bearings journals on this engine.

The Ford Inline Six 250 is essentially an Inline Six 200 that has had the stroke increased by exactly .0784 inches. These changes to the Ford Inline Six 200 increased the power ratings, making it acceptable for use in the light duty trucks. Ford produced several versions of this motor depending ion the application.

Around the same time, Ford Australia introduced the new 2V cylinder head, which was externally identical to the old design, except the aluminum intake came with a Stromberg 2V carburetor. This version of the Inline Six 250 came equipped with a more efficient exhaust manifold that allowed it to ‘breath easier’ with more power. The cylinder head change became popular, and was used extensively in North America by racing enthusiasts.
