Ford Introduces New Engine at The 2009 Cleveland Auto Show

March 1st, 2009

GotEngines.com is reporting that Ford Motor Co. is previewing a new internal combustion engine technology at the Cleveland Auto Show 2009.

EcoBoost is the future, offering a new, greener, twin-turbocharged high-performance V-6 engine. Production will start this year at Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1, opened in 1951. If you have an engine called a Cleveland or has a Cleveland code, now you know why.

The new engine technology, which Ford hopes will become a new standard of its gasoline power plants in upcoming years, will be heavily featured in the automaker’s show/display area.

Other car makers will also show off their latest technologies in shiny new production hybrids, all-electric or good old-fashioned gasoline and diesel vehicles.

Ford will begin production of the new engine this spring, returning over 200 employees to their 1.6 million square foot Cleveland facility. Initially the engine will only go into the new Taurus SHO high-po sedan, the Flex crossover and the Lincoln MKS and MKT vehicles.

By 2013, Ford expects to be able to offer EcoBoost engines in 90 percent of its vehicles.

Ford says the 3.5-liter V-6 engine delivers the power of a V-8 engine, capable of creating 355 horsepower and 350 lb/ft with the better gas mileage of a V-6. Followed by an upcoming four-cylinder version that will have V-6-like power while burning even less fuel, claimed to get 25 to 26 miles per gallon in highway mileage and 18 to 20 miles per gallon in city driving.

Automotive assembly technicians are currently going through 160 hours of training at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland Ohio, learning to assemble the new engines in what is a highly automated factory.
