I remember the first engine I rebuilt. It was a 390 cubic inch 19 71 Ford Engine in a 1971 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive pickup truck. Some of you may remember that those trucks came from the factory jacked up sky high. Why did I choose to rebuild my engine? I was not interested in paying someone to do a job I knew I would have a ball doing. I had no fear, just buy a manual and jump right in. The word rebuilt engines or rebuilt “motors” sounded good to me.
I stripped it and took the main parts to a machine shop. They cleaned the engine and block in a carbolic acid solution first. Then they machined the crankshaft and matched a set of bearings to it, bored the block .10″ over to clean up the piston bores and line bored the camshaft and crankshaft journals to make sure they were straight.
I had the heads machined and had a little extra performance work done to them. Basically, the machine shop only did my machine work, I did the disassemble and reassembly. To add more power I bought a mild performance street camshaft and an Edelbrock Streetmaster intake manifold and a Holly 750cfm carb with vacuum secondary’s to top it off. Oh, I put a dual point distributor on it too.
As I assembled the engine, I took nothing for granted, so all the machine work was checked as I went along. For instance I checked the clearance on the crankshaft to bearings, which is one of the machining processes I mentioned above. I used a product called Plati-Guage. Some of the hotrodders who have rebuilt engines themselves recognize that product.
To make this story a bit shorter, I followed the directions to a tee. I bought a torque wrench so I could torque every nut and bolt to factory specifications and , in essence, over-killed the process by checking and rechecking my work. I still am an over-killer when it comes to doing the job right.
I don’t recommend that you rebuild your own engines. If you need to purchase some sort of rebuilt engines, then it is less expensive and much faster to buy one already rebuilt properly.
