Aside from what most come to Florida seeking: either sunshine or oversized rodents. There is another secret hiding out in the state. Florida has some of the best junk yards in the nation. This stands to reason once one applies a little logic that there are loads of late model cars located in the southern portion of the state. Where does one find quality used auto parts for late model cars? Wherever there are loads of late model cars to be found!

The way the process works is quite simple actually. Acquiring non-operable vehicles is quite a big business for several reasons. The first is that all the parts that are still functioning on the automobile are available for resell. Since most dealerships want ridiculous prices for new parts, the next best solution is to acquire the part used. All cars run on used parts. From the time its driven off the lot, the parts on a car are considered used it just makes good sense to repair a car with them.

The second reason that automobiles go to salvage yards is one more in tune with environmental concerns and since so much of Florida’’s tourist industry relates to beaches and beautiful undisturbed natural habitats it just makes good economic sense to protect those habitats. Having convenient places to properly dispose of those vehicles is what auto recyclers are all about. In addition, it is profitable for them to do so in many ways. One such way is the National Vehicle Mercury Switch Recovery Program (NVMSRP).

This program was introduced on August 11, 2006 by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This program, though nationwide in scope is particular important to Florida. With its many waterways and economic dependency on the tourist traffic to beaches and fishing spots throughout the state, mercury poses a significant hazard to this state. The National Vehicle Mercury Switch Recovery Program is designed to recover an estimated 40 million mercury containing light switches from scrap vehicles that are melted to make new steel. Just the recovery of the light switches from vehicles will reduce the amount of mercury released from these furnaces, which are now the fourth leading source of mercury pollution. This program is advantageous to auto recyclers monetarily as well. The Environmental Protection Agency pays out $4 for every switch turned in which can be quite a hefty sum. The EPA just celebrated the collection of its one millionth mercury switch in February of 2008. The program will continue until through the year 2017.

Because of the wealth of late model vehicles in the state of Florida, auto recyclers and auto owners have the best of both worlds. They get to live and play in a beautiful part of the country and the ease at which they can obtain quality used auto parts means they save a ton of money of vehicle repairs. That means more money to spend enjoying the great outdoors! Whether looking around for a great beach or a great used auto part, the state of Florida has what most people need.
