Continuing my last post, disregard my title because the Saturn engine in my moms car is fine. However, there are numerous issues to deal with. while most of them are small issues, any one of them may cause a breakdown. That was our goal, to eliminate any reason for a breakdown. Obviously the mechanics at Tommy’s place can’t see through metal, but the examination brought out many things that might have been a serious issue.

1. the tires had serious dry rot. one of them had a cut in the side wall. Very dangerous situation.
2. the serpentine/fan belt was cracked.
3. front brakes more than half worn
4. front engine mount worn out. The cause of the heavy vibration at idle.
5. all fluid changed with the appropriate Mobil 1 synthetic lubrication for the engine, transmissions and differential. Including the grease to lube the front end.
6. front end alignment

What do think it costs? It cost over 1000 dollars. Is it worth it? You bet. It is much cheaper than buying a new car. It fits our paradigm of keeping your car and not having a knee jerk reaction to repair bill over one grand. It is not that she is cheap, she values the dollar and won’t waste money, a new car is a waste of money in both of our opinions. I know she can afford a new car if she wanted to, but she went through the great depression earlier in our century. Folks like that don’t waste money, no matter how much they have. In fact many of the folks who went through the depression are loaded with money because the don’t waste money and live a bit below their means.

Enough of my diatribe about money. I ok’ed the job and it will be done today. We both are very happy and feel comfortable. When you have a mechanic you trust and have dealt with for over 30 years, peace of mind sets in and your confidence level is much higher. I hope people take note of this vibe.
