Chevrolet has produced some great engines…

One question I hear a lot of has to do with engine swap-ability. Specifically the question is about what Chevrolet engines will interchange with each other. This is a good question with a simple answer.

The “small-block” Chevy engine started life as a 262 ci V-8 in 1955, it still had a oil cannister oil filter. Then came the 283 ci, 327ci, 350ci (1967 to 2004) until they stopped production in about 2004,

Chevy also built the intimidating “big-block” engine starting in 1963 with the 396 ci and 427 ci engine. The engine was expanded to 454 ci in about 1970..This is one big gas eating power making engine. One of my all time favorites. It stopped being produced in 1996(?).

The point is that these engines will interchange with each other with few if any modifications. They all use the same transmission bell pattern, so it will bolt to nearly every Chevy transmission made during those years and the engine mounts are the same.

Basically you need to modify the exhaust and reprogram the computer to get it to fit and run properly. The other accessories such as A/C, alternator and starter should fit perfectly. It is a great way to up the power on a work truck if the engine fails for any reason. Like lack of maintenance. Lots of people use this swap for their hi-performance cars too.

The guys at GotEngines.com have it already figured out for you if this interests you. Call them at i-877-268-0664 for more information. They can hook you up with a rebuilt engine or simply help you develop a strategy for engine replacement.

One of the things I like about G.M. products is that they have the swap-ability deal going for them. The other manufacturers make it much more difficult, if even possible to do this. Information such as this is hard to find. You can count on the GotEngines.com Blog to fill you with practical use-able information like this.
