“Where Our Customers Send Their Friends”

As I discussing in an earlier article on used engines and clunkers on the treasure coast, for some dealers, even those who benefited the most, the summer sales program was full of problems.

Quoted from an article by Jim Turner of TC Palm Newspaper:

“The required documentation was a total fiasco,” Wallace Automotive Group President Bill Wallace said. “It took hours and hours and hours to do one deal. The first three or four weeks the computer would crash and dealers were having to go in at two or three in the morning to make changes as vehicles would qualify and then didn’t qualify.”

Wallace said if the federal officials who created the program had consulted dealers beforehand maybe more vehicle could have been involved, improving the benefits of the programs goals to stimulate business and improve the environment. And even though many of his dealers handle foreign cars, an emphasis should also have been made regarding the sale of Fords, Chevys and General Motor vehicles, he said.

“I think the whole program could have been much better thought out,” said Wallace, who offers Cadillac, Pontiac, Suzuki, Lincoln and Mercury in Fort Pierce, and Cadillac, Nissan, Mazda, Hyundai, Mercury, Lincoln, Volvo, Volkswagen and Jeep in Martin County.

The list of new cars sold, dominated by Corollas, Camry’s, Optimas, Nissan Altima and Ford Focus, shows that not every deal involved a new vehicle that performed at least 2 miles per gallon better than the clunker.

The data proved my point, that in six of the exchanges there was only a 1 to 2 MPG fuel difference between the clunker trade-in and new vehicle, which shouldn’t qualify under the terms of the program.  Forty six out of the 882  deals resulted in only a 3 MPG improvement on the road.

Vehicles being traded and scraped were supposed to be older than 2001, the Treasure Coast saw 34 approved trade-ins that were models from 2002 or more recently, including one 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis, averaging 18 mpg exchanged for a 2010 Toyota Camry with a 26 mpg rating. According to TC Palm News.

I guess it is fairy obvious this program had it’s good points and bad points, my previous post on clunkers helps validate this. The only real losers here are the folks who have to keep on driving their clunkers. For what ever their reasons may be for keeping their cars, although I suspect it would be a financial issue.

Some engine supply companies I am very familiar with had some insight into what may happen. Particularly to the engines of the clunkers, since they are supposed to be destroyed. GotEngines.com saw the writing on the wall. There is a large stock of good used engines for sale out of clunkers at reduced cost. We hope to be of service to those of you who need of one of our good engines with plenty of life left in it. GotEngines.com @ 1-888-344-8044.
