When is it time for a replacement engine?

July 4th, 2009

When is it time for a replacement engine? Which replacement engine is in your best interests? That depends on the year of your car or truck. As a general rule, if the vehicle is 10 years old give or take a few years and you are an average driver who takes care of their car, a low mileage used engine is a great choice..

As a general rule, many factors come to mind when it comes down to engine replacement time. Certain signs are obvious. For instance, if your hear a loud and disturbing loud noise, see a a bunch of blue or white smoke in the air and a big oil spot under the engine, chances are your engine bit the dust..

That is a pretty dramatic possibility. What if your engine has a lot of miles on it and you see some grey/white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe, or perhaps there is some engine oil in the antifreeze, or vice versa, anti freeze in the engine oil? Assuming you have the car at a reliable shop and these accusation are true, you may get a few answers.

One answer may be to fix the problem with the engine, which in either of the above cases is a major and expensive repair. Requiring disassembly of the top half of the motor to determine the cause. Which would be a bad head gasket, a cracked head or a variable of each of the mentioned possibilities. While the shop may advocate the repairs, which would make them more money than a replacement engine, it may be best to consider the advantages of a replacement engine. Particularly in certain cars.

The reality is that if you start experiencing problems that require major service, and the engine has lots of miles on it, what is going to prevent another portion of the engine from having serious problems in the near future? Nothing. When you take into consideration the labor involved in an expensive repair such as a problem requiring the disassembly of half the engine, perhaps it is best to apply the labor $$ to the installation of a good used engine with low mileage. Considering you can purchase a low mileage used engine for practically nothing, or a JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) engine for pennies on the dollar, this is the logical approach to take.
