I live in an area of Florida called the Treasure Coast, which generally is considered an area consisting of 4 counties. We had 882 clunkers, the bulk of which were Fords, Chevrolet’s and Dodges go down the drain, especially the engines, which had to be destroyed, from the clunkers during the government’s cash for clunkers program this summer.

The Ford Explorer (Exploder as we call it in the auto repair industry)  topped the list for traded in vehicles at local dealerships, followed by Ford pickup trucks and Excursions, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chevrolet Blazer.

On the other side of the coin, the best selling new cars were primarily the Toyota Corollas, Camry and Prius, Kia Optimas and Sedona vans and Nissan Altimas and Maximas, based on information produced by Scripps Howard News Service.

Better known as the Cash for Clunkers (C for C), the program allowed people to get $3,500 to $4,500 towards the purchase of a new car in exchange for an older, gas eating, hi-mileage vehicle. The old vehicle had to get less than the factory EPA rated 18 miles per gallon.

The program required the dealers to scrap the older vehicles as one of the stipulations in the deal. Engines were damaged beyond any type of usage.

Of the 882 new cars purchased on the Treasure Coast through the program, Here is a breakdown of the top most purchased vehicles:

  1. Toyota Corolla: 52
  2. Toyota Camry: 29
  3. Kia Optima: 28
  4. Nissan Altima: 28
  5. Ford Focus: 25
  6. Nissan Versa: 25
  7. Kia Sportage: 23
  8. Hyundai Sonata: 22
  9. Hyundai Elantra: 22

According to data collected by the government, 34,260 cash for clunker deals were arranged in Florida, of which 882 occurred at Treasure Coast dealerships.

I have spoken plenty about this program before, when it was happening. I thought it was poorly thought out and did not reward people fairly. First off, the folks who could not qualify for a loan were left out, and the folks who could not afford a car payment were left out. Not to mention there was no fair way decided by the government to qualify a clunker for a money rebate. Meaning, the guy who traded in an 8 MPG clunker for a new 33 MPG car was rewarded the same as a person who traded in a 17 MPG clunker and bought a new car that only increases the mileage  to 23 MPG.

Should the person who received a net increase in MPG of 25 get a larger rebate then the person who only improved their net mileage by 6 MPG? Darn right, but that is not how it worked. The bottom line is that lots of good used engines with plenty of life were ruined, thus making it more difficult and expensive for the people who could not take advantage of the C for C program left having to pay more for used engines for their clunkers.
