Used Engines revisited…

July 5th, 2009

Perhaps it is economy driven, or the overload of certifiably qualified used engines. GotEngines.com has  been fielding a lot of callers asking us if we can supply them with a low mileage used engine for their vehicles. Without going into any lengthy details, I thought I’d try to help make this decision a little easier.

Lets start our discussion with the differences. Used engines are exactly what they sounds like, “USED”. Buying a pre-owned motor is a wise decision for someone that wants to get their car back on the road again, reliably and at an affordable price. Used engines can run for years and maybe longer then your vehicle will last, but on the other hand, you ARE buying a part that is used. When purchasing any kind of used car part whether it’s an engine or an axle, you always face the risk of having problems.

The best suggestion when buying a used engine is to make sure you buy a parts AND labor warranty. You may want to save a few bucks by settling for a parts only warranty which is pretty much standard no matter where you buy from, but what if you get a used engine installed without a warranty from the supplier that includes the remove and installation labor and it’s a lemon? Here is what happens…you’re going to be footing a double labor bill to have the defective one taken out and another one put back in. You can try to get the shop you bought the used engine from to help out on the cost, but when it comes down to it, labor is not covered unless you add it to your warranty upon purchase.

Also, I want to mention that buying a second hand engine doesn’t mean it won’t be the best replacement engine out there. You can find some pretty darn good deals on used parts, and you don’t have to settle for high miles…you can buy an engine with as little as 20,000 miles (people do wreck their cars.) May I suggest to have your  warranty explained upon purchase, used engines are easy to pre-test.

As far as a remanufactured engine goes, well, it’s pretty much a brand new one in a sense. I guess an easier word to explain it, is refurbished. They’ve refurbished the engine to be in “like new” condition.  Even though a rebuilt engine is probably going to cost you quite a bit more then a used engine you can really find good deals on all engines if you know where to call. We obviously suggest calling GotEngines.com at 1-877-268-0663 for an affordable used engine.

I guess when it comes to the decision of which is right for you, it’s really going to come down to how long you want to keep your vehicle. If you love your vehicle, and you think you’re going to keep it for years to come, re-man may be the way to go. If you’re just looking to keep it running for another few years or you are going to sell it soon, I’d probably look at used engines.

Either way, I’d call around first. At GotEngines.com we have the best access to low-mileage used engines because of our extensive partnership network, which allows us to out perform everyone else, guaranteed.

I hope that helped. To sum it up…Read more about used engines on our GotEngines.com Blog. Feel free to ask a question or make a comment. Enjoy.

FYI: A used engine could out last a reconditioned engine, you just never can tell when it comes to auto parts. And, a lot has to do with the previous owner of the vehicle and how well they maintained their vehicle.

Thanks for a very informative article–I think I may have been the impetus for this (at least in part)–it filled the bill.
