The Ford Sigma is a small inline 4 cylinder sold by Ford Motor Company as the “Zetec-SE” and renamed Duratec and by Mazda as the “MZI”. The engine was introduced in the mid-1990s for the Ford Focus as a 1.6L engine and production continues through the present. The Sigma was designed with help from Yamaha. Intended for Ford’s smaller models, it was intended to replace the older HCS and smaller capacity CVH units…. Which were now available in quantity as used engines, based on attrition.
The original 1.6 L Sigma engines (1596cc) generates 100PS (98 hp/73 kW) at 6000 rpm and 106 ft·lbf (145 N·m) at 4000 rpm. In 2004, along with the launch of the second generation Ford Focus, torque was increased to 111 ft·lbf (150 N·m) at 4000 rpm.
The 1.6 L was also fitted with variable valve timing, known as Ti-VCT (Twin independent Variable Camshaft Timing), and generates 113 hp at 6000 rpm. In 2007 the Ti-VCT unit was uprated to produce 123hp at 6300 rpm.
Availability of these engines is excellent. Depending on your individual needs, the Sigma engines can be purchase in several viable forms. Which include, used engines with low mileage, rebuilt or remanufactured units and new JDM engines.
For most practical purposes low mileage engines can be purchased from some of the finer engine supply companies at outrageously low prices. The beauty of a low mileage engine, with less than 40,000 miles on it is that it is barely broken in and should provide outstanding life, which in turn makes this a terrific value.
