The Mitsubishi Group is a large Japanese corporation that includes a number of different companies. All companies that are part of the Mitsubishi Group share the same trademark and brand. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is one group that is part of the large Mitsubishi Group.

Mitsubishi Motors can be traced all the way back to 1917. During this time, the Mitsubishi Group was known as the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., LTD. This group created Japan’s premiere series-production automobile called the Model A.

This sedan was built entirely by hand, and it included seven seats. The Model A was largely based upon the Fiat Tipo 3, though the Model A was a great deal more expensive than the Fiat Tipo 3. In 1934, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding merged with Mitsubishi Aircraft Co. to create Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. For many years, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was the biggest private company in Japan.

Eventually, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries became the Mitsubishi Motor Corporation, and the company went public in 1988. This move from public to private ended Mitsubishi’s reign as the largest private company in Japan.

Since its beginnings, the Chrysler Company has had a stake in Mitsubishi Motors, though this partnership ended in 1991 when Chrysler reduced its stake in Mitsubishi. Still, Mitsubishi continued its relationship with foreign car companies.

Today, Mitsubishi Motors has many foreign alliances including Hyundai, Proton, Volvo, PSA Peugeot Citroen, and Colt. Mitsubishi is also a large part of the performance car industry producing many racing automobiles.
