What Is A Remanufactured Motor?

August 2nd, 2010

Simply stated, remanufacturing is the process of dis-assembly of products (motors/engines) in our case, during which time every part or sub-assembly is inspected, thoroughly cleaned, repaired (rebuilt) or replaced then reassembled to like new (or better) working condition. A more detailed definition (below) of a remanufactured motor has been adopted by The Re-manufacturing Institute (formerly the Re-manufacturing Industries Council International).

A product is considered remanufactured if:

  • Its primary components come from a used product.
  • The used product is dismantled to the extent necessary to determine the condition of its components.
  • The used product’s components are thoroughly cleaned and made free from rust and corrosion.
  • All missing, defective, broken or substantially worn parts are either restored to sound, functionally good condition, or they are
  • replaced with new, remanufactured, or sound, functionally good used parts.
  • To put the product in sound working condition, such machining, rewinding, refinishing or other operations are performed as necessary.” source is APRA

Other terms may be substituted with remanufacturing in the automotive industry. One such term is rebuilt. Rebuilt can be substituted with remanufacturing when used in connection with motor vehicle parts and systems such as the engine or motor. Other similar terms are, recondition, refurbish, and restored. Ethically speaking, all terms should boil down to the same result.

The point is that a re-manufactured engine or motor should meet said requirements. Realistically speaking, dealing with a straight up company with high ethics should provide you with no jargon confusion. No matter what terms are applied to a replacement engine, the definitions of the terms and answers to your questions should be done so in terms that you understand.
