The “Swenska Aeroplan AB” (SAAB) company was founded in 1937 in Trollhattan, Sweden. Originally, this company manufactured airplanes, though company founders always strived to find ways to increase business.
In 1940, Saab motors began to develop automobiles. 1947 saw the first Saab, the Saab 92001, and soon thereafter the company began to gain a steady following of Saab consumers. The 92001 was a rugged automobile that was vastly different from the Japanese, German, and American cars that were available at the time.
When 1950 rolled around, Saab began to dabble in computers by creating aircraft computing systems. During this time, Saab changed its name to Datasaab in order to reflect its technological activities. Even though the Saab computers were successful, the commercial aspect of the company was sold to Sperry UNIVAC in 1975.
The company changed its name to Saab AB in 1965, and in 1968 Saab AB merged with Scania-Vabis (a truck manufacturer). General Motors took a vested interest in the Swedish company in 1990 by purchasing 51 percent of the automobile sector. Later, General Motors would acquire the rest of the Saab motors company.
