The General Motors Company founded Saturn on January 7, 1985 in order to respond to consumer demands for smaller, reliable, cars. General Motors observed the success that smaller German and Japanese car manufacturers were having, and knew the consumers would enjoy an American car of the same caliber.
For quite awhile, Saturns were built in an independent assembly plant that was based in Spring Hill, Tennessee. The first Saturn that was introduced to the American market was the Saturn S-Series, which turned out to be highly successful.
When Saturn motors decided to explore the Canadian market one year later, the results were largely the same. In 2000, Saturn released its first Compact Crossover Sport Utility Vehicle called the Saturn Vue. In Europe, Mexico, and Brazil, the Vue was marketed as the “Chevrolet Captiva.”
Due to financial troubles, General Motors decided to focus on the Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC brands in 2008. This decision meant the sale or foreclosure of other General Motors brands including Saturn, Pontiac, Hummer, and Saab. In February of 2009, General Motors announced that it would phase-out the Saturn brand, though Saturns already in production would still be manufactured until 2011.
Saturn took a different approach to the automobile from the beginning. Nearly all Saturn’s are built based upon the Z-body platform that included a 1.9 L dedicated motor. Another strong selling point for Saturn was the fact that all Saturns were built with a dent-resistant body.
Even though Saturn will soon be a thing of the past, Saturn automobiles are still well-built. Saturn motors are both dependable and affordable, though choosing a new or refurbished Saturn motor can be tricky.
Saturn motors should only be purchased from dealers with many years of experience. This is precisely why most Saturn owners head directly to GotEngines.com – the online motor shop that knows all about Saturn.
