Michio Suzuki founded the Suzuki Loom Company in 1909. As Suzuki built more and more weaving looms, business began to swiftly pick up. Japanese silk was known as some of the best silk in the world, and the demand for quality looms was high.
During the time of the Suzuki Loom Company, more than 120 patents were filed. Even though the loom business proved to be more than lucrative, Suzuki realized that looms would quickly become a thing of the past. Thus, he looked towards other possible business ventures.
Realizing that the automobile was gaining in popularity, Suzuki decided to build a small practical car. He began building the first car in 1937, and by 1939 various prototype cars were built. The very first Suzuki automobiles were powered by four-stroke, four cylinder motors – an innovative approach to a motor at the time.
As with many other automobile manufacturers, Suzuki’s auto plans were put on hold due to the outbreak of World War II. While Suzuki still yearned to make automobiles, the Japanese government did not believe that his cars were important. In short, Suzuki was forced to return to the loom business.
As it turns out, the Japanese government was wrong in assuming that automobiles were not necessary. Following the war, Japanese citizens desperately needed cars that were dependable and affordable. By the time 1954 roller around, Suzuki was producing more than 6,000 motorcycles per month.
At this precise moment, the Suzuki Motor Company was born. In 1955, Suzuki revealed the Suzuki Suzulight – the first Suzuki automobile that was sold to consumers. From that point on, Suzuki motors were known across the globe.
