When an unpleasant situation occurs and you are facing a repair to your car or truck engine, knowing the basics about engine assemblies is critical. Knowing something about the options, parts and choices, rebuilt or remanufactured engine block assemblies available is the key to your success. Becoming an educated consumer is the best medicine for sorting through your engine choices.

Knowing the specifications and type of engine in question, is key to assisting with your selection and eventual purchase. A short block is considered automotive jargon. Engine short block assemblies, combination’s are closely related to long block engine assembly’s.

The definition of a short block could be put, as all of the engine block sub-assemblies consisting of all of the related internal components rebuilt and installed. No heads or intake manifold.

Long block assemblies are fully assembled engines with rebuilt cylinder heads, manifold/s, rebuilt or new fuel system, new head and intake manifold gasket set.

All types of engines including ‘inline’ or ’straight’ engines, with all of the cylinders in a single row. Or”V” type engines, with two rows of cylinders in a V shape using one crankshaft and one block. Flat or pancake engines are flat engines where the cylinders are opposed or at 180 degrees apart. Like my 1970 Porsche 911 T engine.

The short block engine is normally just the rebuilt block with new pistons with rings and a crankshaft kit with bearings a new cam and timing gear set, all it is missing is the heads and or intake setup in most cases. Always ask what you are getting in the package that interests you.

The long block is as close to a fully rebuilt engine assembly as possible. It is the complete engine as it would be pulled from its under hood space. Manifold, accessories and wiring intact.
