Toyota Prius Engines / Transmissions for sale

Prius Engines For Sale

Prius Gasoline Engines for Sale

We all know the Toyota Prius as the first hybrid car to make it big. Introduced in 2001 in the USA, the Prius started the hybrid trend in America and is still on top of the field, although the competition is putting on the heat. One thing that has not been discussed very much are Toyota Prius Engines/Transmissions for sale.

Cars wear out, in all the hoopla, we have not heard much about after-market repairs and replacement parts for the Prius drive-line. The engine/transmission assembly in particular. Toyota has had certain recall issues to deal with and up until recently, the Prius was under warranty, so the dealer did the repairs, or should I say, replaced parts.

But how well prepared are private independent repair shops to deal with hybrid drive lines? You would be surprised at how many top level shop owners are in preparation now. Our local 4 year college offers a hybrid car class I’m enrolling in [Indian River State College] this semester. I guess my boss will find out about that here. Ironically, I’m also an automotive adjunct teacher at the school and may have a class to teach in the fall semester.

The Prius mainly relies on two features to optimize efficiency and reduce emissions:
1. Its engine only runs at an efficient speed and load – In order to reduce emissions, the Prius can accelerate to a speed of about 15 mph (24 kph) before switching on the gasoline engine. The engine only starts once the vehicle has passed a certain speed. And once the engine starts, it operates in a narrow speed band.

2. It uses a power split device [transmission of sorts] – Gasoline engines can be tuned to run most efficiently in certain speed and load ranges. The power split device on the Prius, which we’ll talk about in another post, allows the engine to stay in its most efficient power band/range most of the time.

Toyota designed the 1.5-liter engine [Atkinson Cycle] in the Prius to run at a maximum speed of only 5,000 rpm, where it makes 76 horsepower. Keeping the maximum speed of the engine low allows for the use of lighter components that improve efficiency.

The electric motor on the Prius is rated at 67 horsepower from 1,200 to 1,540 rpm. It produces 295 pound-feet of torque from 0 to 1,200 rpm, which is more than enough to get the car going without the aid of the gasoline engine.

GotEngines.com has been able to keep an edge on the competition by outthinking them. Clearly someone competent needed to start selling Prius drive-line components like the engine/transmission assemblies to qualified repair shops who have learned how to work on and or replace the engine in a Prius. I’m convinced it is a field that will need plenty of attention in the future with all of the hybrids and electric cars being made.
