2003 Mazda Protege Engine

The Mazda Protege has a short but interesting history. Originally from the Famillia family of Mazda cars, it’s production run only lasted from 1999 -2003. It was the 9th generation of Famillia. Also know as the Mazda 323, and Ford Activia in the US. Some confusion lies in which Mazda Protege engines for sale were used in 2003 only. We will clear that us right now.

I think it’s important to mention that Mazda and Ford have a marriage of sorts and since the Protege is built on the BJ series chassis, you should know the BJ series is a product developed by the Mazda Motor Company in Japan. But since Mazda & Ford are incorporated companies, Ford decided to do some “badge engineering”, which basically means that they take another manufacturer’s car, change some details and put their name plates on it.

Having used as many as eight [8] total engines over it’s lifespan, the choices are plentiful.
Here is a list of the many choices;

1.3 L B3-ME SOHC; I4
1.5 L ZL-DE DOHC; I4
1.5 L ZL-VE S-VT; I4
1.6 L ZM-DE DOHC; I4
1.8 L FP-DE DOHC; I4
2.0 L RF Diesel; I4
2.0 L FS-DE DOHC; I42.0 L FS-DET Turbo DOHC I4

Notice all are inline 4 cylinder engines. Ranging from SOHC [single overhead camshafts] to DOHC [double overhead camshafts] to turbo charged versions for that extra punch. The point is Mazda provided an engine option for the gas mileage enthusiast all the way to the guy who wants to try and take down my 1970 Porsche 911 S.

Since you may be here to buy a replacement engine, with no particular interest in details and specifications. Lets get down to brass tacks. There are several choices one has available as replacement motor choices. Rebuilt engines, we sell lots of used engines and JDM engines are a very good seller, and we have new remanufactured crate engines.
